New Technology Throws Lifeline to the Village Pub
Fresh Ale Bag Technology Limited of Wroxham ( FAB Technology Broadland for short ) has been formed to further Research and Develop the Technology used at Real Ale Experience on The Norfolk Broads at Wroxham.
Essentially, it gives an alternative to the Stainless Steel/Aluminium barrels by supplying a self-venting bag system ( Patent Pending ) that can keep Real Ales fresh for a minimum of 3 month instead of 5 to 6 days. These bags contain 36 pints better known as a Pin and can be sent around the country by courier services in sealed 30 litre storage boxes ( all weighing under 25Kg ) so allowing a micro brewery to expand their catchment area, without having to make further investment in expensive metal casks. The system is 95% recyclable and as it uses a one off new container each time it saves on water for washing casks and chemicals needed for sterilisation.
The development of the Front Loading Real Ale System using the same self venting bags as used in Wroxham can be fitted into a relatively small space behind the bar of a small village pub and can even be put under the counter. The flexibility of the system also means that an outlet could have as many beers as space allows. The idea is that the front of the unit is removed to replace the bags when they run out. Cooling can be routed from the existing cellar or it can utilise existing fridges to keep the beers at the optimum 12 to 14 degrees Celsius. It can also have its own cooling system should it be required. The flexibility continues in that the existing handpump method can also be used with these bags.
The Bull Inn at Litcham is the first outlet to take on the Front Loading System and boasts 20 Real Ales using the new system which compliments their existing two beers, supplied in the traditional handpump way. Get further information on The Bull at www.bullinnlitcham.co.uk .
The Shed in Wroxham which been using the system for over two years dispenses beer by gravity and hand pump using 3 metre by 2 metre cold room behind the bar capable of storing and dispensing up to 3500 pints of beer. With a minimum of 50 Real Ales, Stouts, Milds and Ciders on either gravity or handpump there is also the opportunity of staying in a cottage on the Peninsular where the Shed is located to take part in a Real Ale Experience Weekend. In addition, both outlets offer a takeaway service of either 2 and 4 pint HDPE containers . The beauty of using the 2 and 4 pint HDPE containers means that they can all be recycled, making the takeaways 100% recyclable thereby reducing everyone’s wastage. By returning the empty containers washed out, to either The Bull or The Shed, the customer can obtain 10p off their next pint, with all the money raised going to The Caister Lifeboat, the first Offshore Lifeboat in the Country not supported by the RNLI. Paul Garrod, Chair of Caister Lifeboat stated “ We are really pleased that FAB Technology has decided to support our lifeboat. Its a fantastic idea and throws a lifeline to the village pub, as they can have anything upwards of 2 Real Ales with no wastage due to the beer going off before they can sell a barrel. With the recycling aspect of it too, it’s a win win situation.”
