While the Government are making noises towards tackling anti- social behaviour on the streets they continue with their plans to tax pubs out of business ; the community in a local pub looked after each other, and any trouble was contained by the locals and the 4 walls.Pubs form the central meeting point in the 2 most successful soaps of our time. Where would Coronation Street and Eastenders be without the Rovers Return or the Queen Vic. A good local provides the base for several sports teams such as Sunday league football, darts or snooker. The value of inter pub competition should not be undervalued either.They can provide further vital communication between districts which could go some way towards diluting the gang ‘hood’ culture. Any charity or civic organisation would be based at the local pub too. Carnival floats, street parties, shave your head for red nose day fund raising all come from the pub.The most important reason to revere the local pub culture is the age mix. Nowhere else in society will you find such a wide age range, mixing freely and easily, where the hierarchy provides a lesson in respect of women, your elders and betters. Young men sit alongside men old enough to be their Grandad. They are learning social etiquette which may not have been taught at home or school. The pub has provided a vital link between the generations for years and if for no other reason than that, the expected tax hike on a pint of beer should be rethought. |
