Property News - 2% Tax Increase in Budget is Viewed as Attack on UK Pub Industry; More UK pubs set to close |
| The whole of the British pub industry reacted angrily to the budget. From the British Beer and Pub Association, The Wine and Spirits Trade Association, CAMRA to individual Publicans and members of the general public Pub goers the new tax is seen as the death warrant for thousands of pubs. For those pubs which have struggled to keep their doors open following the smoking ban and the previous tax on alcohol this is a tax too far, and considered a further attack on the industry. But why has the chancellor ignored the campaigns to axe the tax which has received cross party support in the commons? Supporters recognise the value of the local pub to community cohesion and the punitive measures the industry has already absorbed. With the rate of closure of pubs likely to increase from its 6 a day level, and the resultant fall in beer sales in pubs, it seems unlikely that the new tax hike will produce any substantial revenue. There seemed to be no understanding of the scale of loss of jobs in the beer and pub industry. No consideration was given to the impact of cheap supermarket alcohol, drunk off licensed premises, without the community supervision which encourages responsible drinking. Comments and responses on the various forums and articles since the announcement are varied. Some publicans consider the 2% rise a drop in the ocean in comparison to the pubcos recent increase. Gordon Brown and Alistair Darling are barred from most pubs who commented. There was a call for a pub strike at 10pm on a fixed Saturday in the future, so that customers can show their disapproval and as a test town centre policing.
